Participant Observer

Hello San Diego!

The big event this weekend is December Nights at Balboa Park which takes place tonight and all day Saturday. Lots and lots of performances, open museums, vendors, food, and more. The International Cottages will be open and there will be rather continuous dance and music performances on their outdoor stage. Every house will be selling culture-specific cuisine (I love the paella from the House of Spain!). They also have an International Spirit Garden where you can imbibe beverages from around the world!

Cygnet's production of A Christmas Carol opened yesterday and they will have performances through to the 24th. Onstage Playhouse opened It's a Wonderful Vida! with performances through to the 21st. Lamb's Players Theatre will present their adaptation of A Christmas Carol which will continue until Christmas Eve. At Bazaar del Mundo a Santa Fe Marketplace opened yesterday and will continue until Saturday. A great opportunity to pick up some unique holiday gifts. Yet another production of the Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol will open at Old Town Temecula Community Theater.

Friday (Today),  A Merry-achi Christmas concert will take place at Balboa Theatre featuring Sol De México De José Hernández. The San Diego French American School will screen Mystère. Inspire School of Ballet will present their version of The Nutcracker at Patrick Henry High.

Saturday at the Good Samaritan Episcopal Church, Moldavian pop opera group Brio Sonores will perform with Ukrainian-American rock star Ksana Sergienko. At the Encinitas Library, Zimbeat will perform traditional and modern music of South Africa.

Sunday at the Educational Cultural Complex, the play Hairitage will be performed. Spanish pop band La Oreja de Van Gogh will perform at the Magnolia Performing Arts Center in El Cajon.

Monday, the SDSU Javanese Gamelan Ensemble will perform in Smith Recital Hall at SDSU. At Grossmont College, a collective of San Diego musicians present Musics of the Middle East: Concert for Iran.

Tuesday at the Mission Valley Library, SDSU Professor Emeritus Philip Pryde will present a talk billed as The True History of Russia and Ukraine. The Digital Gym will screen Wong Kar Wai’s In the Mood for Love.

Next Wednesday, the House of Colombia will host a Noche de Velitas celebration at the International Cottages.

Next Thursday at La Paloma, the San Diego Italian Film Festival will screen La Dea Fortuna (Goddess of Fortune). Comedian Monique Marvez will perform at Mic Drop Comedy in Clairemont Mesa.  USD's Mariachi Ensemble will give a concert at the on-campus Kroc Peace and Justice Theatre.

Next Friday, the 64th Annual Las Posadas will take place in Heritage Park in Old Town. The German Currents Kino Series at the Digital Gym will screen the film Generation Beziehungsunfähig (Commitment Phobia). There will be additional showings on the following Sunday and Wednesday.

Next Saturday and Sunday, San Diego's All-Youth Nutcracker performances will take place at the JCC.

Next Saturday at Mission Trails Regional Park, there will be a presentation of Kumeyaay Children's Games & Toys. The 26th Annual Parol Lantern Festival will take place at the Educational Cultural Complex. At Westfield Plaza Bonita, there will be a Filipino Holiday Kick-off Party. Pathways Community Church in Santee will host a Christmas Around the World program. At Athens Market Taverna, Koureloudes will play traditional Greek dance tunes, as well as popular and table (listening) songs. El Alebrije is a Mexican-flavored version of the Nutcracker which will take place at Kit Carson Park. At the Educational Cultural Complex, the Filipino arts organization, PASACAT, will present their Hiraya - Fruit of Our Dreams music and dance program.

Cross-cultural/international-themed theatrical offerings in San Diego (in addition the holiday shows mentioned above)  include Baskerville at Lamb's Players Theatre in Coronado, As You Like It at the La Jolla Playhouse, and To Kill a Mockingbird at the Civic Theatre.

Lastly, don't forget to check out Ongoing and Extended Events as well the generous number of International Films screening in local theaters!

Everyone here at the San Diego Participant Observer and the Worldview Project wish you fulfilling, illuminating, and culturally-rich experiences in the days ahead. Stay safe and see you next week!!
